Thirty years of brush miles
The long way to a signature style
Summer's training began formally, studying oil painting at Brigham Young University, where color theory stopped being theory and became a way of seeing. But as she puts it, most of her brush miles came afterward: thirty years of working for herself, painting through every season of a growing family's life.
Along the way she studied with two mentors who shaped the work you see in this gallery. From Bonnie Flood, the celebrated Georgia painter, she absorbed a fearless approach to color and light. From J. Kirk Richards, one of the most respected devotional artists working today, she learned how a painting can hold reverence without losing warmth. Both influences live side by side here: gardens that celebrate, and quiet works that console.
Today Summer paints from her studio in Ball Ground, Georgia, north of Atlanta, where Gibbs Gardens is practically a neighbor and shows up on her easel often enough to have its own series.
